At Wednesday’s Chicago Bulls practice, Vice President of Basketball Operations Artūras Karnišovas was present, actively participating in the team’s practice by grabbing rebounds for rookie Matas Buzelis. Ironically, Karnišovas, who is currently responsible for the Bulls’ front office, could benefit from his own rebounding skills in the realm of NBA executive management. In April 2020, Artūras Karnišovas took charge of the Bulls front office, succeeding the former regime of John Paxon and Gar Forman, collectively known as “GarPax.” This transition brought a sense of optimism among Bulls fans as they welcomed a new direction in leadership.
This fool AK is so confused about his role with the Bulls. Should have his ear glued to his phone but is out here rebounding with his hat on backwards like some Middle aged finance bro #BullsNation pic.twitter.com/FRTFOOJUnC

Karnišovas outlined his vision for constructing a championship-caliber contender through a strategic approach, emphasizing the importance of the draft. However, three months later, he made a significant trade by sending out draft picks to acquire Nikola Vucevic, followed by surrendering further draft capital for DeMar DeRozan and Lonzo Ball, which ultimately led to a quicker pursuit of contention. This decision deviated from his initial commitment to building through the draft.
During the initial half of the 2021-2022 NBA season, Karnišovas’s bold strategy of constructing an immediate contender appeared to yield success as the Bulls maintained the best record in the Eastern Conference. However, a series of unfortunate injuries to Lonzo Ball and Zach LaVine in a game against the Golden State Warriors marked the beginning of a downward spiral. The Bulls’ subsequent decline from first place in the East to sixth allowed them to qualify for their sole playoff appearance during Karnišovas’s tenure. Over the next two years, Karnišovas would observe as the Bulls remained stagnant in the middle of the pack, ultimately losing to the Miami Heat in the Play In’s in both seasons.
When Artūras Karnišovas — who once touted building through the draft — has one playoff win on his resume and is flirting with losing his third lottery pick, but the numbers below are of seemingly more consequence to the powers that be, I don’t know what to tell Bulls fans… pic.twitter.com/UXXWnkpn5W

Karnišovas continues to make false promises of doing everything possible to rebuild the Bulls back into a contender. Responding to questions about the roster’s shortcomings with quips such as “wait until after the trade deadline to see how the team looks” only to make no trades for the preceding three seasons is unacceptable. Furthermore, his lack of activity on the trade market and his mismanagement of draft capital have resulted in the selection of players with shooting concerns. This is even more head-scratching since the Bulls have been so desperate for shooting talent.
In his opening statement at exit interviews, Artūras Karnišovas said the Bulls will address the roster through “the draft, trades and free agency.”

In a recent press conference, AK acknowledged the team’s shortcomings and indicated that all available options are being considered to rectify their performance. This revelation bamboozled fans, once again, to anticipate a rebuilding strategy. Instead, Karnišovas has stated the team intends to prioritize winning every game, regardless of the potential loss of their top-ten protected draft pick to the San Antonio Spurs. The aim should be to acquire a franchise player from the highly anticipated 2025 draft class to complement Buzelis. Now the Bulls are once again stuck in the middle with the trade deadline just two weeks away.
It is fitting that the Chicago Bulls will face the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, as their meeting three years ago marked the commencement of the Bulls' decline under Karnišovas.
Will Karnišovas seek to negotiate a deal with the Golden State Warriors, who have expressed interest in acquiring Vucevic? Perhaps he will utilize Thursday’s game as an opportunity to showcase Vucevic’s abilities to the Warriors as leverage. Alternatively, Karnišova's deceptive nature may lead him to remain idle at the trade deadline, thereby tarnishing his reputation to a state he and the Bulls can’t rebound from.
