Cleveland Cavaliers 2022-23 Betting Guide

Cleveland was ahead of schedule last season. They had one of the best rookies in the NBA and doubled down on defense, getting the Cavs back into the playoffs (er, play-in tourney).

Then this offseason they doubled down again in the form of acquiring an All-Star-level scorer to aid in their development. I am not sure how that trade works out, but I do admire the aggressive move.

Right now, the range of possibilities for the Cavs seems very broad this season. That will make them a team you can definitely make some money on if you can figure them out before the markets do.

2021-22 O/U Record: 37-44-1

2021-22 Year in Review

Cleveland was good in the regular season but injuries dragged them down over the course of the year. Collin Sexton was a nonfactor but Ricky Rubio was great in his place until he got hurt too. Those injuries did help the development of guard Darius Garland, who made the All-Star team. He was joined there by Jarrett Allen, a productive, inside player, who helps set their defense. Evan Mobley was just a rookie but proved to be the kind of versatile, two-way player they were hoping for. Other than losing in the play-in tournament it was a very positive season.

2022-23 Cleveland Cavaliers Futures

Central Division: +350
Eastern Conference: +1800
NBA Title: +3300

The deal mentioned above was the trade for Donovan Mitchell from Utah. Mitchell is an All-Star level scorer and he raises the floor for the Cavs but I do wonder about the fit with Garland because neither is really a knockdown shooter. His greatest value might be as a bucket-getter in the playoffs. Mitchell is also not much of a defender so it will be interesting to see how they cover for that. They have a really strong lineup but not much off the bench.

That bench is Isaac Okoro, who can be a good defender, and an aging Kevin Love. I think Cavs' games are going to be very up and down depending on whether their best 5 is on the floor or not. They should be able to hang with the middle tier of teams and those below, but against good teams, you have to find ways to rest your starters. A lack of depth is going to be exposed at some point.

Cleveland Cavaliers - Bet to Consider

Jarrett Allen to Lead in Rebounding +1300

Allen was 11th in rebounding last season, at just under 11rpg. The league leader was Rudy Gobert and he is +330 to lead again but you have to think playing with another big man in Minnesota forces those numbers to dip, at least a little. Allen is popping up to 6th in the odds table and I can see him being even more productive this season than last. His numbers have seen steady increases every season of his career and there is still room to grow. If he can get it up to 12rpg then he will be in the conversation. He is a true big who also plays in crunch time so the opportunity is there.
