After being waived by the Mavericks ahead of the start of the regular season, Dwight Powell appears set to continue his career overseas. The veteran NBA big man is in the process of finalizing a one-year contract agreement with the Turkish team Fenerbahce, reports Donatas Urbonas of BasketNews.
Powell, 35, spent nearly his entire 12-year NBA career in Dallas, having been traded from the Celtics to the Mavericks during his rookie year back in 2014. The 6’11” forward/center made a total of 763 regular season appearances for the Mavs, averaging 6.5 points and 4.3 rebounds in 17.6 minutes per game while shooting 60.5% from the floor.
A full- or part-time starter in Dallas’ frontcourt for several years earlier in his career, Powell had settled into a modest reserve role in recent years, valued as much for his locker-room leadership as his on-court contributions. Last season, he averaged 3.3 PPG and 4.1 RPG in 14.3 MPG over the course of 63 outings.
Powell was in camp with the Mavericks this fall on a minimum-salary contract that was partially guaranteed for $1MM. However, keeping him on the roster would have required the team to trade or waive a player on a fully guaranteed contract, which the front office ultimately opted not to do. That made the Canadian big man the odd man out when the club set its 15-man regular season roster.
There had been some speculation that Powell could return to Dallas later in the season if a roster spot opened up, but he instead appears poised to compete in the EuroLeague for the first time.
Assuming the deal is officially completed, Powell will be joining a Fenerbache team that is based in Istanbul and has been a perennial contender in recent years, playing in the EuroLeague Final Four in each of the past three seasons and winning the championship in 2025. Fenerbahce’s current roster features several former NBA players, including Shane Larkin, Talen Horton-Tucker, Braxton Key, Wade Baldwin, Trent Forrest, Nicolo Melli, and Johnny Juzang.
