Extending Mike Brown was a no-brainer for the Kings

The Sacramento Kings have agreed to terms on a contract extension with Mike Brown.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the impressive head coach will receive a $4M per year pay rise as part of his new deal. He was previously earning $4.5M per year, but that figure has now jumped to $8.5M.

Extending Brown was a no-brainer for the Kings.

Since taking over, he's revolutionized their roster, helping them snap a 16-year absence from the postseason. In his two seasons with the Kings, Brown has led the team to a 94-70 regular-season record. He was also voted the 2023 NBA Coach of the Year for his work with the franchise.

Brown has implemented a fast-paced system in Sacramento. He's overseen the development of Keegan Murray, who projects to be a future All-Star. He's also gotten the best out of De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis as individuals and as a tandem. Malik Monk has also been a success story of Brown's short tenure in Northern California.

After years of being one of the worst teams in the league, Brown has Sacramento trending in a positive direction. By extending Brown, the Kings have rewarded their head coach for his impressive work over the last two years while staving off any interest from around the league.

Getting the deal done early will allow the Kings to enter free agency in a position of power. Players will be more inclined to consider joining the franchise, knowing the head coach is tied to a long-term deal.

A lot has changed in Sacramento over the last two years. Extending Brown is a clear indicator of the front office's forward-thinking. Now, the Kings will look to build on the last two seasons as they look to construct a roster capable of contending for a championship.
