Giannis’ Miami Heat Debut to Feature Anthony Edwards

The Heat were dominated by Minnesota last season in their two contests, losing by a combined 38 points, and were simply outmatched. The Timberwolves had superior size, speed, and athleticism, something Miami looks to change this season.

And the one major X-Factor, will be Giannis Antetokounmpo, who makes his Miami Heat debut, at home.

Below is a look at some of other Miami Heat legends debuts.

In their first game wearing a HEAT uniform, Alonzo Mourning recorded 15 points, five rebounds and five blocks in 1995; Tim Hardaway posted 20 points and nine assists in 1996; Shaquille O’Neal finished with 16 points, five rebounds and two blocks in 2004; LeBron James had 31 points, four rebounds and two blocks in 2010; and Jimmy Butler tallied 21 points, five rebounds and three steals in 2019.

Giannis will look to beat those performances on National Television, against a really solid opponent.

The Heat and Timberwolves sit in similar standing in their respected conferences. They are in the middle to upper-echelon, but they have yet to take the next step (Miami has yet to take that step, beyond making the trade).

The Timberwolves have one of the NBA's best players in Anthony Edwards, and have a solid roster, but now they give Edwards a co-star in LaMelo Ball, with the hopes of giving them more star power to get over the top, eerily similar to the Miami Heat.

Giannis has had pleasant success against the Timberwolves in his career going 15-7 and averaging 23 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 5.9 assists. If he could match those averages, his debut would instantly go down as one of the best in Miami Heat history, and beating a top team in the Western Conference would certainly provide a good hype, buzz, and optimism for the upcoming season.

As we approach the middle of October, and work our way into training camp, it will be up to Erik Spoelstra and company to craft the correct offense, develop chemistry, and instill their winning formula into their incoming players.

With just over two months until opening night, the Miami Heat's first matchup will be one to look forward to, and one that everyone can see.
