NBA veteran Klay Thompson finally vented his frustration about his current team, the Dallas Mavericks, after widespread speculation. Here’s what you need to know about Thompson’s much-anticipated vent.

Klay Thompson Finally Vents Frustration About Dallas Mavericks

Thompson has spoken the truth about the Dallas Mavericks fans’ frustration in a post-Luka Doncic world. Mavericks’ fans, also known as the “MFFLs,” went from hopeful to hostile entering the 2025-26 NBA season. He admitted to ClutchPoints the tough truth that he and the Mavericks deserve to be criticized. He added that he and the Mavs needed to give the fans something to cheer for.

Fast forward to today. He has finally vented his frustration about the team. The team has just three games remaining in the regular season and missed the postseason for the second straight year.

His frustration appeared to boil over after Tuesday’s 116-103 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif. He recorded 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks. He shot just 4-of-17 from the floor and 1-of-10 from three-point range.

His apparent disappointment showed toward the end of Tuesday’s game. He appeared cordial with teammate Max Christie before putting a towel over his head and getting up.

Previously, The Athletic’s Christian Clark reported that Thompson had a four-minute stretch where he scored 14 points in an away game against the San Antonio Spurs at the Frost Bank Center on February 7. Clark’s report stated that Thompson turned over to the Spurs’ bench and said, “It doesn’t matter. We’re tanking.”

Klay Thompson’s Future

As expected, Thompson’s future remains speculative, with various scenarios and rumors circulating. He will enter the final year of his three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks in 2026-27. He’ll make about $17.46 million.

He has been a professional in the Mavericks’ locker room in each of the past two seasons, along with his interviews and press conferences. While his professionalism is a positive, his overall performance isn’t up to par and doesn’t align with the Mavs’ long-term plan.

The Mavs have been leaning toward a youth movement and a long-term rebuild, with the options of creating roster space and flexibility for the future. Thompson never received what he deserved in Dallas, but it is what it is. He can want more money, but he’ll likely be difficult for the team to trade at his current salary.

If the Mavs reclaim an extended salary with some draft capital thrown in, then Thompson can become a buyout candidate and sign with a playoff-contending team of his choice, such as the Golden State Warriors. If he returns to San Francisco, a potential reunion can excite Warriors fans.

Next Steps

Without a doubt, Thompson’s future in Dallas is fading away. Not only did Thompson struggle to return to his “Splash Brother” status, but he also struggled to provide consistent three-point shooting. His presence was widely viewed as an immediate solution to fill in the Mavericks’ void, but his scoring declined.

The Mavs’ difficult conversations about who should stay or go in Dallas have gained traction as a result of the struggles among players like Thompson. That being said, Khris Middleton appears to be a top candidate to remain in Dallas next season. Middleton is a veteran forward but is providing solid offensive depth, along with performances off the bench.
