The Knicks apparently will indeed have some much-needed frontcourt depth for Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, center Mitchell Robinson is expected to be available when New York opens the series against the Spurs on Wednesday night in San Antonio.
That’s welcome news for the Knicks, especially considering Robinson underwent surgery just last week after suffering a fractured fifth metacarpal in his right hand following New York’s Eastern Conference finals victory over the Cavaliers.
Exactly how the injury occurred remains somewhat of a mystery. It didn’t happen during a game or practice, but it was significant enough to require surgery and initially raised questions about Robinson’s availability for the Finals.
As it turns out, Robinson wasn’t about to let a broken hand keep him sidelined.
Videos from Tuesday’s practice showed the veteran big man shooting, passing and dribbling while wearing a protective wrap. He was officially listed as questionable, but Charania reported that Robinson is trending toward being cleared to play.
The timing couldn’t be much better for New York.
While Robinson no longer starts, he remains one of the Knicks’ most important role players. His rebounding, interior defense and shot-blocking ability give coach Mike Brown another weapon against a Spurs team led by Victor Wembanyama.
Robinson averaged 5.3 points and 5.5 rebounds in 14.2 minutes during New York’s playoff run, often providing an energy boost off the bench.
Of course, opponents continue to target Robinson’s free-throw struggles. He’s shooting just 30.2 percent from the foul line this postseason, which has occasionally limited how long Brown can keep him on the floor.
Still, if Robinson is healthy enough to contribute, it could be a significant development for a Knicks team seeking its first NBA championship since 1973.
