Magic Johnson Celebrates Michael Cooper’s 70th Birthday with Heartfelt Update

Magic Johnson shared a very special update about a lifelong friend this week. A reunion of the biggest names in basketball history took place in Los Angeles.

On April 19, 2026, Magic shared that he celebrated Michael Cooper’s 70th birthday with a “good old-fashioned dance party.”

Magic’s update highlighted a bond that has lasted nearly five decades.

The actual party happened on Friday night, April 17, 2026. This was exactly two days after Cooper’s real birthday on April 15. The guest list primarily featured members of the extended Lakers family.

The guest list looked like a basketball history book. Johnson and his wife, Cookie Johnson, were there to celebrate.

They were joined by former teammates Mychal Thompson, Jamaal Wilkes, James Worthy, and Norm Nixon. Vlade Divac, Robert Horry, Byron Scott, and longtime Lakers trainer Gary Vitti also showed up.

James Worthy posted a great group photo on April 18. He captioned it as a celebration with their Lakers family and tagged several players. Robert Horry also posted on Instagram the same day to share his own tribute.

Johnson and Cooper share a bond way back from Johnson’s rookie season in 1979-80. They clicked and created the famous “Coop-a-loop” play.

Johnson always says Cooper pushed him to greatness by playing so tough against him in practice. Cooper feels the same way, calling Magic his “winning friend” and noting their bond is not only restricted to the basketball court.

Cooper built his reputation across 12 seasons and five NBA championships with the Lakers.

History of Michael Cooper’s Greatness

Cooper was born in Los Angeles on April 15, 1956. He played at Pasadena High School before earning first-team All-WAC honors and becoming a first-team All-American in 1978, and was then inducted into the Lobo Hall of Honor in 1992.

He spent 12 incredible NBA seasons playing almost completely for the Lakers, and won 5 NBA championships in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988.

In 1987, he won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, which was quite a rare honor for a guard.

The Lakers retired his #21 jersey in January 2025, and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2024.

After leaving the NBA, he went overseas and won the Italian All-Star Game MVP in 1991. Then, he found huge success as a coach.

He led the Los Angeles Sparks to back-to-back WNBA championships in 2001 and 2002, and won Coach of the Year in 2000. He also won a G League title in 2006 and currently coaches the Cal State LA men’s basketball team.

The recent 70th birthday party was a perfect celebration of a life that shaped an entire era of basketball. Which is your favorite memory of Michael Cooper on the court?
