There’s no doubt that the NBA is currently the biggest basketball league in the world.
Despite this, the decline in viewership in recent times has been a huge concern for NBA commissioner Adam Silver.
Many have blamed the superstars for taking too much rest during the regular season and All-Star weekend, the league’s premier event, for being boring.
However, in the modern era, there’s another huge concern – the rising costs of watching games. With the rise of streaming platforms, the NBA has essentially priced out its most valuable customer, the common man.
As the commissioner of the NBA, Silver is responsible for ensuring that the product is affordable for fans.
However, when asked about the astronomical rise in prices to watch NBA games, Silver offered a tone-deaf statement about the concern.
“There’s a huge amount of our content that people can essentially consume for free. I mean, this is very much a highlights-based sport. So Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, you name it.
“Any service, the New York Times, for that matter, to the extent that your content is not behind a paid firewall,” Silver said (h/t NBA Central on X).
He added: “There’s an enormous amount of content out there. YouTube, another example that is advertising-based, that consumers can consume.”
When the commissioner of the league makes such a statement, it’s bound to cause an uproar among the fans. As expected, NBA fans called out Silver for his controversial comments.
Adam Silver says fans who can’t afford streaming services to watch NBA games can still watch free highlights, calling the NBA a “highlight sport.”

Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban has been in the headlines in recent weeks. First, for defending LA Clippers owner Steve Ballmer amid the Kawhi Leonard controversy.
Now, Cuban has found his way into the spotlight by reacting to the NBA commissioner’s tone-deaf statement on X.
“Adam definitely whiffed on this one. But I can tell you that unless a lot has changed in the last 20 months, he is one of the people standing up for fans in a room where a lot of owners are not,” Cuban stated.

The Mavs minority owner both called out and defended the NBA commissioner with his statement. But what’s the solution?
“Since local TV broadcasts have imploded, most teams are offering free local broadcasts. So fans can see their team except on the national exclusives,” Cuban said.
Cuban has played it by balancing his answers to stay on the good side of both – the fans and Silver.
