The Dallas Mavericks have endured a difficult 2025‑26 season as they approach the NBA trade deadline. Dallas currently sits 19‑30 and outside playoff positioning in the competitive Western Conference.

The Mavericks’ struggles have been underscored by injuries, most notably Kyrie Irving’s torn ACL, which has sidelined the nine‑time All‑Star for most of the campaign. Dallas has also been without Anthony Davis, who has played only 20 games this season and battled a slew of injuries.

Rookie Cooper Flagg has shown promise, but Dallas has lacked consistent spacing and scoring balance, contributing to uneven results. It has also been a difficult year for veteran guard Klay Thompson, who has managed to stay healthy but is averaging career-lows in points and three-point percentage.

As the NBA trade deadline nears, the Mavericks are now reportedly exploring contingency plans to move on from Thompson.

According to The Athletic’s Christian Clark, Dallas is willing to listen to trade offers for Thompson, even though he was brought in to complement their young talent and veteran stars.

Thompson, a five‑time All‑Star and four‑time NBA champion, signed with the Mavericks in July 2024 on a three‑year, $50 million contract that included a player option for the final season.

At 35, he remains one of the league’s most accomplished shooters, ranking fourth on the all‑time three‑point makes list, but his role with Dallas this season has been sporadic.

Dallas’ reported openness to trade offers for Thompson comes amid broader roster evaluations. The Mavericks are also exploring moves involving Daniel Gafford and D’Angelo Russell, per Marc Stein of The Stein Line.

Should Thompson be moved, the Mavericks could acquire draft assets or younger rotation talent that aligns more with a longer‑term rebuild ahead of the 2026 offseason. Teams seeking veteran shooting and playoff experience would likely show interest, given Thompson’s pedigree and ability to stretch defenses even as he ages.
