NBA Legend Magic Johnson Announces Personal News on Wednesday

Magic Johnson played 13 seasons in the NBA, all with the Los Angeles Lakers. The former Michigan State star went on to win five NBA titles, three Finals MVP awards, three league MVP awards and made 12 All-Star Game appearances.

Since retiring for a second and final time in 1996, Johnson has seen his business portfolio grow. He owns an investment and media company called Magic Johnson Enterprises and holds ownership stakes in the LA Dodgers, Washington Commanders, LA Sparks and LAFC.

Johnson is also well-known for his involvement in the Los Angeles community. On Wednesday, the 66-year-old shared some personal news related to this.

After it was announced that Johnson had been named the 2026 Grand Marshal of the 137th Rose Bowl Parade, he took to Instagram to share the news with a heartfelt post.

"WOW! I am deeply honored to be announced as the 2026 Grand Marshal of the 137th Rose Parade," Johnson said. "I remember watching the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game with my family growing up in Lansing, MI. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that God would blessed that same kid with an honor of this magnitude."

Johnson added, "To be named Grand Marshal for the Rose Parade, and to build on my legacy and represent my family on this stage is not something I take lightly. 1look forward to both the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl this year. Now more than ever, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses is so important to honor the strength, resilience, and unity of the Altadena community as they continue to rebuild."

As the Grand Marshal, Johnson will lead the parade, set the theme and toss the ceremonial coin in the air. The parade will take place on New Year's Day at 8 am ET, with the College Football Playoff quarterfinal game scheduled later that day.

In their official announcement of this news, the Rose Parade wrote. "From the court to the community, Magic embodies 'The Magic in Teamwork,' inspiring generations through leadership, excellence and heart."
