Pacers

The Pacers have decided to part ways with veteran guard Cameron Payne, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Indiana plans to waive the 10-year veteran after a brief preseason stint.

The Pacers had initially targeted Monte Morris for a camp deal before pivoting to Delon Wright, who was injured during preseason play.

Payne was then brought in as a replacement but struggled to find his rhythm, shooting just 28.6 percent from the field and recording nearly as many turnovers as assists.

The 31-year-old had stops in Phoenix, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and New York in recent years, and appeared to have an opening for minutes with Tyrese Haliburton (Achilles) out for the year and T.J. McConnell (hamstring) sidelined.

Instead, rookie guard Taelon Peter seized the opportunity, moving ahead of Payne in the rotation.

Payne was on a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 contract, so his release won’t affect the team’s cap sheet.

Indiana is expected to keep Tony Bradley, rounding out a 15-man roster for opening night.

Bulls

Chicago’s frontcourt just took a hit, as center Zach Collins underwent wrist surgery to repair a non-displaced fracture in his left wrist and will be reevaluated in four weeks, the team announced.

The 27-year-old was set to back up Nikola Vucevic but will now miss the start of the season. Collins, who came to Chicago in last February’s three-team trade with the Spurs and Kings, averaged 6.4 points and 4.5 rebounds in 28 games after the deal.

With an $18.1 million expiring contract, Collins could also be a trade chip later this season once he returns.

Grizzlies

Memphis has trimmed its roster to the league limit, waiving Nate Hinton, DeJon Jarreau and Braxton Key, the team announced.

All three were on Exhibit 10 contracts and are expected to report to the Memphis Hustle in the G League.

Key, who spent the full camp with the team, logged eight points and six boards in limited preseason action. Hinton and Jarreau joined the roster late but are both familiar faces around the organization.

Each will earn a bonus worth up to $85,300 if they spend at least 60 days with the Hustle.

The Grizzlies now have 15 guaranteed contracts and three two-way players entering opening night.

Depth will be tested early, with several injuries already piling up — including Scotty Pippen Jr., who recently underwent toe surgery and is expected to be out until the new year.
