NBA superstar Nikola Jokic once made it very clear he wouldn’t put himself in the same tier as his fellow Serbian countryman, Novak Djokovic.
Nikola Jokic and Novak Djokovic are two of Serbia’s greatest sporting icons, both at the peak of their respective fields.
Yet when Jokic was asked about his countryman’s influence after leading the Denver Nuggets to the NBA Finals, he made it clear that he wouldn’t accept being compared to him. His reasoning showed why admiration sometimes runs deeper than achievement.
After guiding the Denver Nuggets to their first-ever NBA Finals in 2023, Nikola Jokic was asked about Novak Djokovic’s success and global reputation.
He responded with humility and warmth, describing Djokovic as a national figure whose impact extends beyond tennis.
“He is a guy who represents Serbia in a much bigger scene. He’s a Serbian ambassador, and he’s really an idol to the kids in Serbia.
“Not just on the court, but with the things that his foundation is doing. He is the guy you can look up to and say, ‘I want to be like him.’
“He is doing something great for kids, for Serbia, for everything. So we cannot be compared.”
That closing line defined Jokic’s perspective — one built on respect rather than rivalry. To him, Djokovic’s achievements speak to something larger than sport: the ability to inspire a nation through excellence and example.
Nikola Jokic is one of the best athletes to come out of Serbia. So for him to refuse the comparisons to Novak Djokovic was initially surprising.
However, it’s clear just how highly the Joker regards Djokovic and what he has done for Serbia on the world stage over his amazing career.
Jokic’s refusal to accept comparisons wasn’t about modesty. It was about recognising that Novak Djokovic’s influence stretches far beyond trophies.
To him, Djokovic represents the best of Serbia — the athlete, the ambassador, and the example. And he wanted to make sure the legendary tennis star was shown the proper reverence.
