Warner Bros. Discovery Sports runs NBA.com and NBA TV. Warner Bros. Discovery and TNT are no longer part of the NBA broadcast family. So who’s running the league’s official website and television station?
Well, it seems WBD is handling things at the moment. But the future is indeed a little murkier as the league shifts its media rights package to the new $76-ish billion deal it received from ESPN, NBC, and Amazon.
WBD, formerly Turner Sports, officially handles NBA Digital — which includes NBA TV, NBA.com, League Pass, the NBA App, and NBAGLEAGUE.com
One of three newcomers could take over the editorial and production side of NBA.com and NBA TV from WBD. It seems likely. But for now, several NBA.com and TV employees have told Hoops Wire they’re not sure what the future holds.
NBA.com has a few full-time writers and other editorial staff members. All have received their checks from Warner Bros. Discovery. Same goes for anyone who works for the league’s official TV station. Those who spoke to Hoops Wire several weeks ago said they felt as if their futures were uncertain, as they had yet to be informed of what’s next.
Interestingly, NBA.com has recently begun posting stories from The Athletic, owned by The New York Times. So the league has at least one new editorial partner, and it’s a good one at that.
But for now, who and how the league manages its official website and television station remains up in the air.
That said, current employees aren’t expected to be impacted immediately, one source told Hoops Wire. Whoever is running NBA TV and NBA.com next isn’t likely to make sweeping changes — regardless of whether it’s ESPN, NBC, Amazon, or the league itself.
