College football made its triumphant and long-awaited return to video games this year with the release of EA Sports' College Football 25. The game was the first for the sport since NCAA Football 14, as the series skipped an entire generation of consoles.

Fans responded by making CFB 25 the best-selling sports video game of all time, and it seems that its return could inspire the return of another sport to the virtual arena.

According to Mike Straw of Insider-Gaming.com, both Electronic Arts and Take-Two (the publisher for the NBA 2K series) have had internal conversations about a new college basketball game.

Straw says it's unclear how far along those talks are, but that there's a heavy push to make the game in both companies.

The wait for a new college football game spanned the entire lifespan of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, but the wait for a new college basketball game has been even longer.

2K's last release was the beloved College Hoops 2K8, featuring a recently-drafted Greg Oden on the cover. EA's last college basketball game was NCAA Basketball 10, featuring then-No. 1 overall draft pick Blake Griffin on the cover in an Oklahoma uniform.

Fans have continued to update the game's rosters to this day, allowing college basketball fans to play games at Duke with created versions of some of their recent stars like Jayson Tatum, Brandon Ingram, Zion Williamson and even Cooper Flagg.

2K dipped its toe in the college basketball waters a few years ago by signing licensing agreements with certain colleges to feature them in their career mode.

Players were able to send their virtual pro to play at a handful of top college programs, a move that some fans say opened the door for a new game.

CFB 25's success shows that fans want new college sports video games, and there's an entire generation of games who have never played a new college basketball game.

We'll see if either 2K or EA can get the job done and make a new game, but it's clear that fans will show up to support after more than a decade-long absence.
