The league is officially and graciously entering its final stretch, and the 2026 NBA MVP race appears all but decided. Though it’s not something we don’t have any clue about, there has been a good showing throughout the season in the NBA MVP Power Rankings from the league’s top candidates.
However, without a doubt, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has emerged as the overwhelming favorite, according to ESPN’s latest straw poll of 100 media voters.
The 27-year-old received 88 first-place votes, far ahead of San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who finished second with just eight. Nikola Jokic placed third, while Luka Doncic and Jaylen Brown rounded out the top five.

The gap between the top two candidates is astonishing, as Gilgeous-Alexander has firmly taken control of the race. He finished more than 300 points ahead of Wembanyama in the poll, reinforcing a trend that has held for the past several weeks.
Additionally, his case extends far beyond just the voting sentiment, as the Thunder hold the league’s best record at 61-16, and the guard has been central to that success, averaging over 31 points on efficient shooting while anchoring a team that has navigated injuries throughout the season.
The case, however, was so obvious that even Shai had been dropping hints about the lopsided trend.
That said, Wembanyama’s late push, fueled by strong two-way production and team success, has kept him in the conversation. However, the margin suggests he faces an uphill battle with limited games remaining.
With only ten days left in the NBA regular season, the debate over who should take home the MVP trophy is almost set. While the race has been a rollercoaster all year, many are wondering if there is still time for a late-season plot twist.
The most interesting challenge comes from Victor Wembanyama. Since early February, his San Antonio Spurs have been on an absolute tear, winning 27 of their last 29 games. Additionally, Wemby isn’t shy about his ambitions either, recently stating that he believes he should lead the race.
On top of that, statistically, he’s a force, averaging 24.7 points, 11.5 rebounds, and a league-leading 3.1 blocks.
However, going by the data, the ‘turnaround’ might be more of a fantasy than a reality. In the latest ESPN straw poll of 100 media members, reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander remains the immovable object at the top.
Leading the only 60-win team in the league while averaging over thirty points, Gilgeous-Alexander has the narrative and the wins on his side. While stars like Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic round out a stellar top five, it looks like SGA’s “clutch” consistency has effectively slammed the door on any last-minute surprises.
