No Extension Decision Yet For Stephen Curry

As Slater outlines, the Warriors have made it clear to Curry that a wide variety of options are available to him, including signing a one- or two-year maximum-salary deal, accepting something a little less than the max, or waiting to make a decision later on in the 2026/27 league year. He’ll remain extension-eligible all the way up until June 30, 2027.

Speaking to Slater, Curry said there will be “no drama” regarding his contract situation, insisting that it won’t be a distraction in the locker room if there’s no resolution before media day next Monday. After telling CNBC last week that going through free agency doesn’t interest him “at all,” he reiterated to ESPN that his “obvious goal” is to remain in Golden State for the rest of his playing career.

“It’s going to happen at the right time, once I have all the information I need to make the decision that is right,” Curry said of a new deal. “The team’s been great having that conversation back and forth. If I don’t sign, it won’t affect me in terms of my play or carrying that weight. But I’ll make the decision when I’m ready.”

As Slater points out, with Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green among the many Warriors on expiring contracts, the team could create in excess of $100MM in cap room. A max or near-max deal for Curry would reduce that figure but would still leave the team with plenty of room to operate.

Waiting on an extension could give both the Warriors and Curry more information about what the club could realistically do next summer with that cap room, particularly if the two-time MVP takes a pay cut on his next contract.

“We’re in a very interesting situation,” Curry said. “All the different salary cap conditions of whether I sign for a max or less or whatever it is, I want to be on a competitive team. I want to have an opportunity to have some flexibility because we haven’t had that in years past, the recent past.

“… This team should have flexibility to make necessary moves if things happen. Those are always just the considerations. For me, information and patience is key. It’s just a very unique situation all the way around based on where we’ve been the last four years, where I’m at in my career, what our team looks like this year and the absolute desperation to win. Trying to balance all that.”

Curry was limited to 43 regular season games last season due to a knee issue, but he told Slater he feels good about where his body is at with training camp set to begin next week.

“The idea of getting back to work is exciting,” said the 38-year-old guard. “I feel like I’ve taken advantage of the offseason. I feel like there’s no hesitation about where I’m at physically going in. … But I’m excited about getting back to work.”
