One big concern limited Jaylen Brown's trade value

The Boston Celtics made one of the most surprising moves in recent NBA history.

While trading Jaylen Brown wasn't necessarily a bombshell move, sending him to the Philadelphia 76ers for pennies on the dollar was a bit of a head-scratcher.

A player of Brown's caliber, in the middle of his prime, usually goes for more than two first-round picks, two second-round picks and an aging former All-Star, especially if he's traded to a direct rival.

According to ESPN insider Tim McMahon, the Celtics have no one to blame but themselves for the poor return. Apparently, other teams thought the mere fact that he was available was suspicious.

Other teams had major doubts about Jaylen Brown

“Several scouts and executives said potential trade partners were also concerned about the reasons the Celtics might be so motivated to move Brown in the middle of his prime,” MacMahon wrote.

Moreover, Brown's latest string of comments, unapologetic demeanor and social media presence may have ruffled some feathers around the league.

He didn't do himself many favors, and it only took an even bigger toll on his value, as he was seen as a bit of a trouble-maker with a big ego.

“The common perception is that Brown’s unapologetically strong personality, outspokenness and reluctance to adapt his style of play factored into the Celtics’ front office’s decision that he needed to be traded now. That prompted worries about how Brown would fit with other teams with established stars,” MacMahon added.

Not many former Finals MVPs get traded before they turn 30, leading to speculation about what more could be going on.

Recent reports indicate Brown didn't see eye to eye with Jayson Tatum, so the Celtics ultimately had to make a decision.

And while Paul George won't be his replacement, at least for the long run, general manager Brad Stevens reportedly believes they already have his heir in the building
