Pierce and Garnett Theorize The Idea Of Trading Joel Embiid To The Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves lost in the 2025 Western Conference Finals despite the rocky campaign they had in the 2024-25 regular season. It was a fantastic second half to their campaign, but it showed there is much to improve upon.

Having a stronger supporting cast would be a good idea, even though the Timberwolves already had a solid eight-man rotation. This has led Timberwolves legend Kevin Garnett and former NBA Finals MVP Paul Pierce to throw some ideas around, one involving former MVP Joel Embiid.

The Timberwolves have a superstar in Anthony Edwards, who raises their ceiling to the top of the Western Conference. They almost reached the pinnacle, but they had to face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the WCF.

Edwards and the team did well, as they pulled off an admirable run. However, some people think they might need more firepower beyond Edwards.

Pierce And Garnett's Ambitious Idea

The offseason is in full swing for teams like the Timberwolves, as most people are watching the NBA Finals between the Thunder and the Indiana Pacers. The discourse includes the Timberwolves, a team that is looking to catch up to OKC.

Most people's initial idea would be to improve on Mike Conley Jr. in the point guard position. He lacked the dynamic offense the team needed to relieve Edwards of the immense pressure put on him to generate the offense alone.

Pierce and Garnett have gone in the opposite direction, as they feel like shooting for a superstar big man is a good idea. They feel like Joel Embiid is available from the Philadelphia 76ers, which is ambitious, but they think it could help the Timberwolves.

"Embiid to Minnesota. Take all of them. Give them that young Dillingham, that kid off the bench, you can develop him," Pierce said about a potential Embiid trade.

"No, I don’t want that, for the big fella, I want everything over there. Give me Naz Reid, DiVincenzo, Randle, and Rudy," Garnett continued.

The legendary duo laughed about it when they came up with the idea, but it showed some ambition, which the Timberwolves might want to tap into during the 2025 offseason.

The Timberwolves Have A Big Offseason Coming Up

While it is unlikely that the Timberwolves aim for an Embiid trade, it should be a sign to make big moves in the offseason. They don't have to follow Pierce and Garnett's ideas, but they could shake the roster up and build on their success over the past two seasons.

It is challenging to keep standing out in the Western Conference, but they have come close to winning it in the past two postseasons.

The Timberwolves are close. They need to find the right pieces to surround Edwards. He is the right superstar for the franchise, but they need more players to support him, which could come in different forms whether it's a true secondary star or a point guard, who brings dynamic offense.
