The Toronto Raptors have surged to open the 2025–26 season, riding a six-game winning streak and holding the second seed in the Eastern Conference. A major factor in their success has been the steady play of small forward RJ Barrett.
Now in his third season with Toronto, the 25-year-old has continued to showcase his versatility on both ends of the floor. His ability to create his own shot and attack the basket has made him a dependable scoring option. Through his first 16 games, Barrett is averaging 19.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists while shooting 50.7% from the field, 34.5% from three-point range and 70.3% from the free-throw line.
During Sunday’s home game against the Brooklyn Nets, Barrett got off to a strong start, recording 16 points, two rebounds, one assist and two steals in his first 20 minutes of action.
With 7:32 remaining in the third quarter, he went up for a dunk but landed awkwardly, appearing to injure himself on the play. He converted the basket to extend Toronto’s lead to 72-65, but it came at a cost.
Moments later, he was subbed out and immediately headed to the locker room. The Raptors soon announced that Barrett had suffered a right knee sprain and would not return. “Raptors say RJ Barrett, right knee sprain, will not return,” reported Marc J. Spears of ESPN.

Barrett’s importance to Toronto extends beyond this hot start. Drafted third overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks, he was acquired by the Raptors in December 2023.
Since then, he has embraced a larger role, evolving into a dependable two-way wing who thrives attacking downhill and defending multiple positions. His ability to create offense when plays break down has been critical during the team’s winning streak, giving Toronto a consistent scoring option alongside Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram.
Barrett’s injury is a significant concern. Losing him for any stretch could disrupt the team’s momentum in a competitive Eastern Conference. For a franchise eager to prove it belongs among the league’s elite, Barrett’s health and continued growth remain central to both their immediate success and long-term aspirations.
