Hours before LeBron James stunned the sports world in 2014 with the biggest NBA free agency, he shared his secret with Miami Heat teammate Dwyane Wade. And Rich Paul just told the world.

Speaking on an episode of the Game Over podcast posted to X via Heat Central on June 2, 2026, LeBron James’ agent, Paul, shared the exact moment when James told Wade about his decision to move back to the Cavaliers.

“D Wade was the only player LeBron told what he was going to do. I think they had landed back in Miami at like 3 or 4 in the morning, and he told him right then. The next day we was on the phone, and the rest was history.”

The timeline Paul described was a post-season getaway to Las Vegas that James took with his Miami Heat teammates. When their plane finally touched down in Florida, James chose to tell Dwyane Wade his plans. No one else knew what was coming, and Wade was the only player with the news.

Wade and LeBron have shared a longstanding friendship ever since being drafted together in 2003. The two began as rivals, with James playing for the Cavs, while Wade was making a name for himself with the Miami Heat. 2010 saw James move to the Heat and form the legendary ‘Big Three’ with Wade and Chris Bosh.

While it is clear why Wade was part of this conversation, Paul is positioned to speak on these private moments because he has been part of the inner circle.

After officially becoming a full-time agent in 2012 and founding Klutch Sports Group, Paul managed the behind-the-scenes contract talks throughout the Miami era.

While the late-night disclosure shows the bond between the two superstars, it also explains the motivation for the entire move. The choice to leave Miami was a calculated step toward a career milestone.

Why LeBron James Prioritized Legacy Over the Miami Dynasty

During the podcast discussion, Paul stated that the choice to leave Florida had nothing to do with contract disputes. Instead, he claimed the plan to return to the Cavaliers was driven by a desire to secure a hometown legacy.

This explanation matches the timeline from the summer of 2014. James exercised his early contract termination option and signed a two-year contract with the Cavaliers.

On July 11, he announced his return to Cleveland through a published essay. He then signed a two-year, $42.1 million contract with the Cavaliers to maximize his future cap flexibility.

Wade later admitted, per a July 12, 2014 report by NCB Miami, that he was initially upset about losing the best player in the league. However, though he was sad about losing his basketball brother, he also backed James’ new journey home.
