Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert made a significant decision on Saturday regarding his international basketball career with the French national team.

According to L’Equipe, Gobert, 32, has withdrawn from playing in this summer’s EuroBasket tournament, which will be held from Aug. 27 to Sept. 14 in Poland and Latvia. The reason for his decision has yet to be revealed.

The French national team is also expecting San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama to announce his withdrawal from the tournament. The All-Star center is currently battling deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, which could hinder France’s chances of winning this year’s EuroBasket event.

Gobert also did not compete in the 2017 EuroBasket tournament because of a knee injury he wanted to recover from. However, he is still a six-time medalist and helped France win silver medals in the 2021 and 2024 Summer Olympics.

At 7-foot-1 and 258 pounds, Gobert averaged a double-double of 12.0 points and 10.9 rebounds per game with the Timberwolves during the regular season. In the postseason, he helped Minnesota reach the Western Conference finals by defeating the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors in the first two rounds.

Gobert averaged 9.6 points and 9.4 rebounds per game in the Western Conference semifinals with a 64.3% field goal efficiency.

However, he could not help Minnesota reach the NBA Finals for the first time. His watched lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games. During the conference finals, Gobert averaged 5.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game on 52.2% field goal efficiency while pitted against Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein.
