The European Basketball Championship is underway and the Serbian National Team is quickly off to a solid start.

The goal is clear — winning gold — and anything less will be seen as a disappointment. These expectations are not only coming from Serbia but also from respected experts and media across Europe, who highlight Serbia as the number one favorite to win this year’s EuroBasket. For fans following the journey through Merkur Xtip, every friendly group game and knockout clash adds another layer of anticipation.

The Roster

The 12-man roster includes Aleksa Avramović, Stefan Jović, Vasilije Micić, Bogdan Bogdanović, Marko Gudurić, Vanja Marinković, Ognjen Dobrić, Nikola Jović, Filip Petrušev, Nikola Jokić, Nikola Milutinov, and Tristan Vukčević.

The biggest concern was whether Nikola Jokić would answer head coach Svetislav Pešić’s call, but the roster announcement confirmed his participation. Some names expected by fans are missing, such as Aleksej Pokuševski, Uroš Plavšić, and Nikola Đuričić, but Pešić clearly knows which players can deliver his vision at EuroBasket.

Serbia Off to Strong Start in Group “A”

Through their first three games in Group A, Serbia is undefeated with wins over Estonia (98-64), Portugal (80-69) and Latvia (84-80).

While they blew out Estonia and handled Portugal, their closer margin with Latvia suggests they may be in trouble against Turkey this week, who blew them out by 20 points. Turkey may very well be the toughest matchup of group play as they are also off to a 3-0 start, but Pešić’s men are expected to handle it.

Nonetheless, Serbia’s 3-0 start has already qualified them for the Round of 16. Here are the stat leaders through the first three contests:

  • Nikola Jokic: 24.3 PPG/10.0 RPG/4.7 APG/1.7 SPG/65% FG/29% 3PT/95% FT
  • Nikola Jovic: 12.3 PPG/4.0 RPG/3.0 APG/71% FG/83% 3PT/100% FT
  • Bogdan Bogdanovic: 9.0 PPG/3.5 RPG/4.0 APG/78% FG/50% 3PT/100% FT

If Serbia tops the group as anticipated, they will face the fourth-placed team from Group B (Germany, Finland, Great Britain, Lithuania, Sweden, Montenegro) in the Round of 16.
