The New York Knicks might have to face Victor Wembanyama in Game 1 without Mitchell Robinson. The reserve center has been listed as questionable for the contest with a broken pinky, but the detail about his injury is intriguing to say the least.
On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, ESPN insider Shams Charania dropped a bit of detail about Robinson’s injury during his appearance on NBA Today. But the story about how exactly the finger was injured is not known. The details remain “murky”, as Charania himself stated.
“What he has is a broken pinky, but even more specifically, damage to his fifth metacarpal. He’s going to need to wear a brace, I’m told. A pretty sizeable one to play.”
Shams: "I'm told Mitchell Robinson fully plans––is resolute––on playing Game 1…Knicks still must clear him

"We see today no brace [but] he's going to need a pretty sizable brace to play
"How did this happen? Details murky

The video showed Robinson entering the practice facility without any brace or splint. Charania believes that Robinson will be required to wear one. But there is still no clarity from the team about the particulars of the injury, except that it happened off court.
“But how did this all happen during the Knicks’ off-week? That is the question… The details are murky. What I do know is that Mitchell Robinson hurt himself at his own home, and so an ill-opportuned time for an injury, of course,” Charania added.
Robinson underwent surgery to fix the injury last week.
But, according to Charania, despite the injury, the Knicks center “fully plans [and] is resolute on playing Game 1.”
But of course, the Knicks’ medical team must clear him first. This will be crucial, as Robinson has been an essential part of the Knicks rotation.
Robinson has mostly come off the bench this season as a backup center to Karl-Anthony Towns, but his presence has been critical to the Knicks’ dominance of the East.
When Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs visit Madison Square Garden, the Knicks will need Robinson more than ever.
The Knicks big man has proved to be an important defensive piece. He is crucial to his team in securing boards, shot-blocking, and providing extra physicality when head coach Mike Brown needs it.
Robinson’s importance is underscored by the previous series between the Spurs and Thunder. After losing Game 1, the Thunder used Isaiah Hartenstein’s physicality to slow down Wembanyama.
The Knicks must find a similar answer in Robinson.
He can use his physicality to keep Wembanyama away from the paint. He is averaging 5.3 points and 5.5 rebounds in this postseason. If he is unavailable, Brown might have to use third-string center Ariel Hukporti.
