The Golden State Warriors, with one game left at Chase Center before their first-round series heads back to Texas, already have a 2-1 lead over the Houston Rockets.
The young Rockets boasted one of the best defenses in the NBA, although, all series long, their offense has been lacking. Even without Jimmy Butler, the Warriors have been able to slow down Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green for the most part, and Houston doesn't boast the scorers needed to make up for Sengun and Green being shut down.
While defense is important (just ask Nico Harrison), the Rockets simply have not been able to put the ball in the basket. They have cracked 100 points only once, and are shooting only 41.3 percent from the floor in the series.
“The Rockets, the offense is an issue,” said The Athletic’s Es Baraheni. “It showed up in Game 3. They shot 40 percent from the field. Sengun basically didn't make a single shot around the basket other than a dunk, one dunk that he had. So I think part of that is Draymond. I think the defensive masterclass that he put up in Game 3, looking into Game 4, once they add Jimmy, that spells trouble for Houston for sure.”
With Sengun and Green locked up, Houston has relied on Fred VanVleet and Amen Thompson, who are taking the third and fourth most shots on the team in the series.
They are shooting a combined 20 percent from deep.
“And all of a sudden now it's Amen Thompson and Fred VanVleet that you're depending on to make shots,” added Dave DuFour. “Like especially here in the playoffs, like those guys, I think Steve Kerr is basically bet on the right thing. I don't think Fred VanVleet can beat the Warriors. I don't think Amen Thompson can beat the Warriors. Definitely not with a jump shot."
With a 2-1 lead and one more game at home, the Warriors are now expected to win the series over the second-seeded Rockets, setting up a second-round matchup against either the Minnesota Timberwolves or Los Angeles Lakers.
