LeBron James’ longtime agent, Rich Paul, is not doing him any favors in the GOAT debate, according to former NBA player turned analyst Kendrick Perkins. A recent take from Paul prompted Perkins to take a stand.

Perkins criticized Rich Paul during a ‘Perk Unplugged’ segment on the Road Trippin Show. He was reacting to Paul’s controversial take regarding Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. The clip was shared by X user @NBA__Courtside on June 1, 2026. Perkins made his stance clear in a response.

“This is where he got to stop. This is where he starts to hurt LeBron James GOAT case. This is where people start saying the ‘controlling of the narrative.’ You speaking on MJ and saying these things, and it’s like ‘here go Rich Paul, LeBron’s guy to hype up his GOAT status.’ But it’s not hyping it up, it’s actually making it worse!”

The conflict began during Paul’s appearance on the Game Over podcast on May 30, 2026. During the show, he argued that Pippen was the most impactful player on the legendary Bulls dynasty teams. Paul claimed that Jordan would have been “0-6” in the Finals without Pippen on the roster.

Perkins took serious issue with these comments because of where they came from. It is no secret that Perkins is a longtime supporter of James in the GOAT discussions. However, Paul is James’ longtime friend, his agent, and the CEO of Klutch Sports.

Perkins believes this conflict of interest changes how fans perceive such bold comments. Because Paul is so closely linked to James, many fans view his criticism of Jordan as an attempt to uplift James’ standing.

Perkins wrapped up his point by noting that these arguments only create backlash instead of helping James’ case.

There is a reason why the former champion wants the agent to just stay quiet. He believes that LeBron doesn’t need anyone to fight his case: his stats speak for themselves.

Why LeBron James Needs No Defense

Perkins believes James’ resume is strong enough to stand on its own. He believes there is no need for additional hate on Jordan to justify James’ place in the conversation.

Jordan is viewed as the leader of the Bulls dynasty. His six Finals MVPs, 10 scoring titles, and innumerable iconic playoff performances are enough to understand his legacy.

On the other side, James possesses his own statistical claim to the GOAT title. He is the NBA’s leading scorer, with a staggering 43,440 points. He also won four championships, four MVP awards, and 22 All-Star and All-NBA selections.

MJ, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird all have impressive resumes. But the thing that makes James special is his combination of longevity and consistency, even at the age of 41.

In the 2025-26 season, he played well for his age, providing the only leadership for the Los Angeles Lakers. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per night.
