Jeff Teague believes LeBron James should leave the LA Lakers if the franchise is truly putting Austin Reaves ahead of him.
The reaction came from disbelief, not disrespect toward Reaves. James is still one of the biggest names in basketball, but the Lakers’ future is being discussed more and more through a younger core.
That is where Teague drew the line. To him, there is a difference between planning ahead and making the GOAT feel secondary.
Speaking on the Club 520 podcast, Teague reacted strongly to talk that the Lakers could prioritize Reaves over James.
“Hold on, did I just read that the Lakers will prioritize Reaves over LeBron? It’s time to go Bron, if n_____ start putting Austin Reaves over you,” Teague said.
He added, “And I like Austin Reaves y’all never disrespect the GOAT like that. Rip Hamilton wasn’t prioritized over Michael Jordan when Michael Jordan was 41.”
Teague made it clear that his issue was not with Reaves as a player. He actually said he likes him, but believes the Lakers would be crossing a respect line if James is treated as the lesser priority.
The Michael Jordan comparison explained his point. Even late in Jordan’s career, Teague does not believe a franchise would have openly framed another player as more important than him.
The Lakers’ situation is complicated because Reaves is entering a major contract window while James is near the end of an unprecedented career.
Reaves is expected to decline his player option and pursue a long-term deal, which makes keeping him one of the Lakers’ biggest roster questions.
James, meanwhile, has reached a stage where every contract conversation is about more than salary. It is about role, timeline, and whether the Lakers still see him as central to their title plans.
That is why Teague reacted so sharply. He sees the Lakers’ reported thinking as a signal that the franchise may be moving emotionally and strategically toward the next chapter.
If the Lakers cannot balance those two ideas, Teague believes the answer is simple: Bron should go somewhere he is still treated like Bron.
