Victor Wembanyama had just helped send the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA Finals for the first time in more than a decade.

That historic victory gave the Spurs a much-needed push while they chase a well-deserved championship. Additionally, it was a field day for Wemby, who won the Western Conference Finals MVP.

Soon after the nod, former NBA legend Magic Johnson publicly congratulated him. Despite the milestone for the 22-year-old’s meteoric rise, Wembanyama expressed no interest in talking about individual awards.

His mind was already on the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Fresh off San Antonio’s 111-103 Game 7 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, Wembanyama delivered an emotional answer when asked what an NBA championship would mean to him.

“Winning the Larry O’Brien is a childhood dream, and having a real shot at it, having a tangible chance at winning it — it’s a lifetime chance,” he said during the presser.

“You never know when it’s gonna happen again. But the day we win it, speaking for myself, it’s going to be an amazing day- the realization of a dream,” Wembanyama added.

Fair enough, for a player who is usually calm and measured in front of cameras, the comment offered a rare glimpse into how much this moment means.

Wembanyama finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, and a block in the series-clinching victory, helping the Spurs dethrone the defending champion Thunder on their home floor. Officials named him the recipient of the Earvin Magic Johnson Trophy as Western Conference Finals MVP

Still, Wembanyama made it clear that the job is far from finished. The French superstar repeatedly praised his teammates after the victory, highlighting San Antonio’s balanced effort that saw seven players score in double figures.

Victor Wembanyama Goes Viral For His Passionate Game 7 Celebration

Irrespective of how much media attention he gets, Victor Wembanyama has spent most of his young NBA career looking almost unbothered.

The San Antonio superstar rarely gets too high or too low, even as expectations continue to pile up around him. But after Saturday night’s Game 7 win over OKC, there was no hiding what the moment meant.

As the final seconds ticked away on the victory, cameras caught Wembanyama overcome with emotion. The 22-year-old laughed, cried, hugged teammates, and soaked in the reality that he had just led the Spurs to their first NBA Finals appearance since 2014.

The emotional reaction quickly spread across social media, with fans celebrating the raw moment.  Though it’s easy to understand why the moment hit him so hard, Wembanyama finished the WCF with a phenomenal average.

He also became the youngest Conference Finals MVP since the award was introduced.

Now, after one of the most emotional nights of his career, the Spurs star finds himself just four wins away from accomplishing the dream he has chased since childhood.
