Cooper Flagg has already caught the attention of a former Los Angeles Lakers player before even stepping onto the court for his first regular-season game.

The Dallas Mavericks used the number one overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft to select Duke standout Cooper Flagg, a move that’s already drawing plenty of attention.

Though still early in his career, many see him as a future multiple-title winner for Dallas. Excitement around the 18-year-old is rapidly mounting, with hopes soaring just as fast. To gauge how realistic these expectations are, it’s best to begin by looking at his fellow players on the Dallas roster.

Even at 18, there are high hopes for Flagg among NBA fans, particularly in Dallas.

Since the Luka Doncic trade to the Lakers, Mavericks supporters have been looking for a new face of the franchise. Max Christie, who arrived in Dallas as part of that deal, recently offered his thoughts on the rookie.

“Cooper’s great. You guys are gonna be very excited to watch him. You should be. He’s so young. He’s 18… He’s got that drive to him, for sure. He’s gonna be good,” Christie said via Mike Curtis on X.

The former Laker added: “He’s gonna be an All-Star eventually in this league, hopefully if he continues to work the way he does. He’s got all the tools. He’s got the mindset. He’s going to be great for us.”

While some see regular All-Star appearances as just part of what Flagg is expected to achieve, it still speaks volumes about how highly his teammates think of him already.

How Cooper Flagg looked during 2025 NBA Summer League

While the regular season is still a way off, fans have already got a glimpse of what Flagg brings to the court.

His debut in the 2025 NBA Summer League didn’t go as planned, with Bronny James keeping him in check. But he responded quickly, dropping 31 points in his next game.

After that performance, head coach Jason Kidd decided he’d seen enough and sat Flagg for the rest of the games.

The question now is whether he can carry that form into the regular season and help push Dallas into playoff contention right from his rookie year.
