The Dallas Mavericks recently signed Power Forward PJ Washington to a contract extension and brought back Guard Dante Exum. The Mavericks’ recent signings signaled a roster finalization attempt ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season. But the million-dollar question is, where will Washington, 27, fit in the Mavericks’ lineup? Read on to find out a possibility or two.

Will PJ Washington Fit In the Dallas Mavericks’ Lineup?

The Dallas Mavericks confirmed the deal on Thursday. Washington’s deal is reportedly worth $89 million over four years, according to a person with knowledge of the extension. The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity as the terms weren’t released. The Mavericks’ deal made sense. He has been a valuable role player since joining the Mavericks in a deal before the 2024 NBA trade deadline. He and the Mavericks went to the NBA Finals four months later.

Fast forward to the present. Washington can fit in the Mavericks’ lineup as a small forward. However, things are much more interesting now, with the addition of forward Cooper Flagg. Flagg, 18, can also play small forward. Both forwards can play alongside point guard Kyrie Irving when Irving, 33, returns from a torn ACL.

PJ Washington’s Outlook

His outlook entering the 2025-26 NBA season seems to be optimistic. Not everyone is convinced that he is worth the hype, but it’s important to note that he is a versatile player who often shows growth. Washington averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, while shooting 45.3% from the field. His averages are quite impressive for a role player. His averages can speak for themselves.

Final Thoughts

Right now, Washington is the better choice in terms of guards. He has a slight edge over Exum. Exum, 30, is one of the Dallas Mavericks’ options at point guard. However, Exum’s injuries hindered his success in Dallas. He has missed significant time with injuries in each of his two seasons with the Mavericks. The Mavericks made room for Exum by waiving Forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper, a once-hyped fan favorite.
