Who Will Play in Spurs vs. Suns?
© Daniel Dunn–USA TODAY Sports

The San Antonio Spurs (11-9) will take on the Phoenix Suns (11-8) on Tuesday night in the final game of group play in the NBA Cup. The Spurs are 2-1 in the Cup but are narrowly losing the point differential battle to the Suns and Oklahoma City Thunder, who boast the same record.

The Spurs and Suns are yet to meet this season, but the Spurs won the series last year, 3-1. If the Spurs manage to win tonight, they could conceivably jump from the 10th seed in the Western Conference up to the seventh seed.

Assuming that Jeremy Sochan plays, the Spurs will be at near-full powers for the first time in multiple weeks. The Spurs have some statement wins in the NBA Cup this year, defeating the Thunder last month, but the Suns are 2-1 in the last three games, which is when Kevin Durant returned from his own injury.

The young Spurs seem to have placed added emphasis on the Cup, so the semi-playoff atmosphere might drive the Spurs to find success, but they are only 3-5 on the road this season.
