Why Warriors’ Steve Kerr would consider banning 3-pointers…after Stephen Curry retires

The Golden State Warriors have many questions to answer this offseason, including what the future holds for head coach Steve Kerr. Kerr has been open about his uncertainty regarding whether or not he will remain as the Warriors’ head coach moving forward after winning four championships in the Bay Area.

Recently, Kerr participated in a candid interview with Charles Bethea of The New Yorker, and one of the topics discussed was the current influx of three-point shots in the league today, which some say has diluted the product.

Kerr proposed a drastic solution to the perceived issue.

“I would even consider getting rid of the three-point line,” said Kerr. “…the analytics revolution has created a weird situation where we all know exactly where the highest efficiency shots are: layups and corner threes because the corner three is twenty-two feet and not 23.9, like the up above the break… I just wonder… if we got rid of the three-point line, if it would diversify the way everybody would play and create a lot of different creative solutions to basketball.”

Some might note the irony in Kerr’s proposition given the fact that he was renowned as one of the greatest marksmen from beyond the arc in league history, and due to the fact that the Warriors have played a big role in ushering in the three-point revolution with their usage of the shot over the years, headlined by Stephen Curry, who has emerged as the greatest shooter the game has ever seen.

Kerr clarified that “I’d rather wait till Steph’s retired.”

It’s unlikely that the league would consider such an idea anytime soon, but as teams continue to play a more monotonous style of basketball that isn’t necessarily thrilling to watch, it wouldn’t be a shock to see conversations had.
