5 Best Quarterbacks in Rams History

Everett remains the Rams’ all-time leader in touchdowns, though he finished 46-59 and faced accusations about being “soft” and wanting to avoid getting hit.

Then-ESPN commentator Jim Rome learned firsthand the consequences of such comments during their infamous altercation in 1994.  

Discussing Everett’s career is difficult without mentioning Rome, and it’s admittedly unfair to Everett. But the counting stats and the context don’t help his case, either. 

Former No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff also had a strong argument for this top five list, but we elected to show Everett some love. 

4. Roman Gabriel (1962-1972)

The No. 2 pick in 1962, Gabriel threw 154 touchdowns in 11 seasons with the Rams, which isn’t especially notable.

But from 1966 through 1972, the Rams won 63 of the 96 games that he started. Gabriel captured the MVP in 1969, when he threw a league-leading 24 touchdowns and led the Rams to an 11-3 finish.

Unfortunately for Gabriel, much of that seven-year span came when the NFL only had six playoff teams, so the Rams missed the postseason at the wrong time.

3. Norm Van Brocklin (1949-1957)

As is typically the case with pre-merger quarterbacks, don’t read too much into Van Brocklin’s counting stats. He led the Rams to a 1951 NFL championship and, along with Tom Fears and Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch, ushered in the first signs of a modern passing game.

Hirsch was the only player to even clear 900 receiving yards during his 66-catch, 1,495-yard, 17-touchdown season in 1951.

Van Brocklin went 42-20-3 in nine seasons with the Rams, and the greater context of his career is enough to put him No. 3. But by this point, you should know the two quarterbacks who ranked above him. 

2. Kurt Warner (1998-2003)

Warner was phenomenal during that three-year “Greatest Show on Turf” stretch, winning 35 of 43 starts and completing 67.2% of his passes for 12,612 yards, 98 touchdowns, and 53 interceptions. He earned MVP honors in 1999 and 2001, leading the Rams to the Super Bowl both times.

So, why didn’t Warner receive the No. 1 spot?

He missed most of the 2002 season with injuries and was benched after one game in 2003. Considering how beloved he remains among Rams fans, it’s easy to forget just how poorly things ended in St. Louis, at least from a playing perspective.

1. Matthew Stafford (2021-Present)

Warner has the edge in MVP awards, but Stafford was the easy choice here.

Over his first five years in Los Angeles, he threw for nearly 20,000 yards, 141 touchdowns, and led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory to cap off his opening season in LA.

He’s all but solidified his place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day, and a second ring would very likely guarantee him a first-ballot election.

Stafford, who earned his first MVP in 2025-26, has carved through opposing defenses with such precision and elegance throughout his Rams tenure, even into his late 30s.
