'Absolutely not' - Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer shares strong opinion on George Pickens concerns ahead of Week 2

George Pickens didn't get to do much on his Dallas Cowboys debut as he was only targeted three times in the team's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last week. Even though he had no complaints about it, Pickens' past with the Pittsburgh Steelers will inevitably make his target share a talking point all season long.

Many fans are concerned if Pickens isn't more involved on the offense's gameplan than he was Week 1, glimpses of his feisty personality could start popping up for the first time at The Star. Some are already worried about his effort when run blocking or running routes in plays where the ball was clearly not headed his way.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer, however, doesn't share those. On Wednesday, he was asked if he had any concerns about Pickens' effort after watching the film and his opinion was strong.

"Absolutely not," Schottenheimer said. "Again, I wish we would have gotten more targets, quite honestly. Thought they did a good job taking him away. But listen, I’m the biggest George Pickens fan in the world. And as a teammate, the way he plays the game, he plays the game the way we want everyone to play on the edge, but don’t go over the edge."

The film shows George Pickens can put in more effort

The film isn't as clear as Schottenheimer's opinion, though. In the final play from the Cowboys offense when Dak Prescott took a deep shot to CeeDee Lamb, the All-22 view suggests Pickens is supposed to "pick" or "rub" nickel cornerback Cooper DeJean to free up Lamb. He fails to do so.

Though it's impossible to know for sure what the assignment of the play was without being in the meeting room, with the way Pickens runs his route, it's evident he isn't the intended target.

The paly was initially pointed out by PFF editor John Owning, who puts together in-depth film breakdowns on his X profile every week.

"When Pickens' isn't the primary or secondary option, his route running effort went into the dumpster [in my opinion], which hurt (the Cowboys) because he's not stressing the defense to create openings for others in those situations," Owning wrote earlier in the week.

Don't press the panic button on Pickens yet, though

Now, I want to be clear: Pickens came into Dallas with a reputation of being troublesome when things don't go his way. But I don't think that's what we're seeing right now. Nor do I believe Cowboys Nation should hit the panic button and think he isn't going to get better.

The Cowboys wide receiver has done and said all the right things since arriving to the team.

"I'm not really worried about the touches, catches, all that stuff. I'm just trying to stay open for the team," Pickens told reporters Wednesday. Like I said, I'm trying to focus on the first win."

Now, it's about marrying his words to his play on the field. Even when he's not the guy Dak Prescott goes to. The Cowboys need him to be more than a pass catcher for the offense to reach its full potential.
