Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper, 28, and his girlfriend were reportedly both arrested on domestic violence charges, TMZ reported on Friday.
The arrests stem from an alleged altercation between the couple on Thursday night, with details from the police affidavit beginning to shed light on what reportedly took place leading up to their arrests for misdemeanor domestic violence and misdemeanor criminal mischief.
Since then, additional details have surfaced about his arrest. According to The Denver Post, Cooper was accused by his girlfriend of cheating on her, which led to the dispute. According to the affidavit, his girlfriend proceeded to take his phone and throw it across the room and then later retrieved it.
It was also reported in the affidavit that Cooper grabbed his girlfriend by the upper arms in an attempt to wrestle the phone away from her. It then stated that he “braced his neck against her neck to prevent her from getting it."
Cooper has been a standout for the Broncos since being drafted in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Evolving into a solid edge-rusher, he has tallied 31.5 sacks and 266 tackles over 81 games, earning a four-year, $60 million extension.
While details of the incident continue to emerge, the Broncos have not yet said whether any disciplinary action is being considered for Cooper.
The team did release a statement, though.
"We are aware of the matter and gathering more information," the Broncos said in a statement.
