Bengals DC Al Golden said his defense can handle Ravens RB Derrick Henry, adding that he wants to see improvement after the win over Miami, which included sloppy defensive plays.
“We must improve on the perimeter run game. That’s one of the things we are working through right now and just trying to make sure conceptually and tactically we’re doing it the way we need to do it to improve there.” Golden said, via The Athletic. “It’s on me. Everything starts with what we’re doing tactically and how we’re teaching it and what we need to improve and what needs to change and where can we be in a different call. But certainly, everybody has a part in it. We all need to improve on it, whether that’s beating blocks, playing better force, coaches putting the guys in better position to make plays and then tackling.”
“Derrick has been doing it for a really long time, just running really strong. You have to wrap him up. You can’t let him get going. You got to find a way to stop his feet in the backfield. So I think they’re blocking really well in the perimeter — wideouts, tight ends.” Golden noted. “I didn’t like what we did at all versus Miami. I thought we got sloppy. A lot of it was late in the game and really had no excuse. I thought we got sloppy with the pass rush a couple times there and let him out. And that gets back to the earlier question: that’s one of the things that we have to improve coming off the bye, just keeping the quarterback in the pocket and making sure we don’t have explosive scrambles.”
Browns HC Todd Monken explained why he gave WR Jerry Jeudy a game ball
“He deserves it,” Monken said, via ESPN. “We’re better on offense when Jerry’s a part of it. And I can certainly do a better job of incorporating him in it. … As a man, he said, I’m going to battle, and I’m going to fight, and I want to be a part of this team, and I want to help make plays, and it builds confidence for us to continue to play him. And he made a bunch of plays. He’s working every day at catching the ball. You can see a difference in that. And like I said, we’re better on offense when we’re able to utilize Jerry and what he can bring in terms of his explosiveness.”
Jeudy is essentially an afterthought on offense, and he talked about how difficult it is not to be a top option.
“It’s pretty difficult, as a receiver, wanting to be out there and compete, wanting to be involved in the game plan, wanting to go out there and make plays,” Jeudy said, “but you can’t let that discourage you, got to stay focused and wait your turn, week by week, and eventually once your number’s called, make a play and that’s what I did.”
