For months, the writing was on the wall.

The rumors never stopped. The cryptic social media posts kept coming. Questions about his role in the offense followed him everywhere. Now that A.J. Brown is officially a member of the New England Patriots, he doesn’t sound like a player who is sad to be leaving Philadelphia behind. He sounds relieved.

According to ESPN, Brown was “elated” to join the Patriots and called New England his childhood team. He even revealed that he had Patriots memorabilia in his home while playing for the Eagles.

That’s a pretty telling statement.

This wasn’t just another trade destination. This was the team Brown wanted to play for growing up. The Patriots were reportedly one of his preferred landing spots, and now he gets a fresh start with head coach Mike Vrabel, who coached him during his early years with the Titans.

From Philadelphia’s perspective, it’s hard to argue with what Brown accomplished.

He helped transform the Eagles into a Super Bowl contender, put together four outstanding seasons, recorded over 5,000 receiving yards, and played a major role in bringing a championship back to Philadelphia.

But by the end, the relationship appeared to be running its course.

Brown recently admitted that the pressure and expectations following the Eagles’ championship created challenges within the organization. He also acknowledged that there were times he didn’t handle situations perfectly and hinted that it was simply time for both sides to move on.

The Patriots are betting that a motivated Brown still has plenty left in the tank. Despite dealing with injuries and constant trade speculation in 2025, he still surpassed 1,000 receiving yards and remains one of the NFL’s most physical receivers.

For New England, this is the kind of move that can accelerate the development of quarterback Drake Maye.

For Philadelphia, it marks the end of an era.

The Eagles may have won the trade from a draft-pick standpoint, but listening to Brown talk about his new team, it’s obvious one thing is true: this wasn’t a player who needed convincing to leave. He sounds excited, energized, and ready to start over.

And if you’re an Eagles fan, that might be the hardest part to hear.
