After a few preseason games for the Las Vegas Raiders, which yielded mixed results, it is clear that the secondary requires improvement.
After struggling against the San Francisco 49ers in joint practice, the Raiders’ defensive back group faced another setback in their preseason encounter. Despite adding several talented players in the offseason, the defense appears unlikely to be competitive in 2025. One could argue that this unit, as currently constructed, may be among the weakest in the league. On Saturday, the team suffered a devastating loss due to a 59-yard field goal. The lack of depth on this team became evident, especially once the starters were off the field. Nevertheless, even then, the concerns were apparent.

Although the third-round pick shows flashes of star potential, his current performance needs improvement. Additionally, the rookie cornerback missed a crucial tackle in the game against the Seattle Seahawks, resulting in a 23-yard touchdown run.
Stokes, the more experienced cornerback of the two, has not demonstrated much improvement in coverage either. Ultimately, these two players are the primary defenders in the passing game.
Because Las Vegas allowed both of their starting safeties for the 2024 season to leave, questions arose regarding this position. Tre’Von Moehrig and Marcus Epps are now playing for different teams. However, Chinn and Pola-Mao have performed admirably in their absence. While it is still preseason and there is room for improvement, their contributions thus far have been quite notable.
In the first game, Pola-Mao had an impressive high-point interception. He will be the main field roamer and this is a wonderful sign. In similar fashion, No. 11 made a diving catch to create a turnover.

Both players are expected to have stellar seasons. But is their play going to suffice for the other struggles?
The primary focus for Sin City should be the young cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. He has plenty of years of experience in the AFC West. Although he is battling to become healthy, he would be a major upgrade at the position. Last season, the 25-year-old only played four games. Before 2024, he consistently had at least two interceptions and 11 pass deflections per year.
Another option is the seasoned veteran, Stephon Gilmore. A former Defensive Player of the Year would be ideal to mentor younger players. He is not the same player as in his past times, but he can still compete at a high level.
Raider fans should hope that this regime understands the lack of talent in this cornerback room. Should this regime fail to make any changes, the 2025 campaign could be lengthy.
