Almost immediately after Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence completed a highlight-reel scramble for a touchdown to help secure a 31-28 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs this past Monday night, social media users accused Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones of not giving his all on that play.
While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid sent somewhat of a message to Jones and other players regarding what not to do in a similar situation.
"You can't think that the guy is down," Reid said, per Dave Skretta of the Associated Press. "You can't think that. You have to play the play. He knows. He's been around this a long time. That's really what it came down to."
Wth 30 seconds remaining in regulation of Monday's contest, Jaguars right guard Patrick Mekari stepped on Lawrence's foot as the signal-caller snapped the football. Lawrence fell to the ground and then stumbled again, but Jones (No. 95) seemed to offer little effort at the goal line before Lawrence rose to his feet and dove into the end zone for the game-winning score. After the Chiefs fell to 2-3 on the season, Jones said that he "thought multiple times we had" Lawrence down.

Things get no easier for the struggling Chiefs, as Kansas City has to host a Detroit Lions (4-1) side seen by many as a legitimate Super Bowl contender this coming Sunday night. Thus, it's understandable that Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton seems to understand he and others in the Kansas City locker room need to have Jones' back coming off Monday night.
"A lot of guys are harping on the play," Bolton said about Lawrence's score. "But you have to keep your eyes where they're supposed to be. Guys are just trying to play fast and make a play. I'm not harping too much on what the outside people are saying. Everybody is doing their job to the best of their ability."
As of Thursday morning, ESPN BET had the Chiefs as 2.5-point home favorites against the Lions for the upcoming "Sunday Night Football" showdown. ESPN stats show that the Lions will enter Week 6 responsible for the highest-scoring offense in the league (averaging 34.8 points per game).
