The Chicago Bears signed veteran running back Salvon Ahmed to their 90-man roster Wednesday, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, continuing an offseason focus on increasing competition across the depth chart.
Ahmed, 27, entered the league in 2020 as an undrafted free agent signed by the San Francisco 49ers before being waived in August and claimed by the Miami Dolphins. During his rookie season in 2020, he finished with 319 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 75 carries, averaging 4.3 yards per carry.
Over his four seasons with Miami from 2020 to 2023, Ahmed appeared in 38 games with four starts, recording 163 carries for 593 yards (3.6 yards per carry) and five rushing touchdowns. He also added 40 receptions for 274 receiving yards and one receiving score. In 2022, he achieved an efficiency mark of 0.271 EPA per carry, per PFSN’s NFL HQ.
After his time with the Dolphins, Ahmed briefly joined the Denver Broncos practice squad in 2023 and later spent time with the Indianapolis Colts in 2024. He later signed a futures contract with Indianapolis before suffering a season-ending ankle injury during 2025 training camp after a hip-drop tackle.
Ahmed’s addition comes after he “worked hard to get back,” per Schultz, and he now enters a Chicago running back group that includes D’Andre Swift, Kyle Monangai, Brittain Brown, Roschon Johnson, Deion Hankins, and undrafted rookie Coleman Bennett. The Bears also moved on from Travis Homer in free agency.
Chicago’s backfield, which helped fuel a top-three rushing attack last season, is now set for further evaluation as the team builds toward OTAs. Ahmed will compete for a depth role, potentially at RB3 or RB4, alongside players such as Roschon Johnson, Brittain Brown, Deion Hankins, and Coleman Bennett.
With 110 career special teams snaps to his name, Ahmed also benefits from familiarity with Bears running backs coach Eric Studesville, who previously coached him in Miami, adding weight to his bid for a roster spot under head coach Ben Johnson.
