Bills' Brandon Beane Explains Process in Backup QB Decision

The Buffalo Bills' backup quarterback battle was one that not many saw as a big storyline this offseason, but it developed into one.

With Josh Allen the starter, behind him, Mike White, Mitch Trubisky, and Shane Buechele were all vying for snaps in preseason and practice to show the coaching staff they deserved the job.

Trubisky and White were locked into the battle with both playing in the first two preseason games, but neither did enough to pull away from the other, while Buechele got the entire third preseason game to himself and looked good.

When the roster cuts began, it was White who didn't survive the cull, leaving Trubisky and Buechele to backup Allen.

General manager Brandon Beane offered a little insight into how the franchise decided on its quarterback room.

"Yeah, I mean listen those are tough,” Beane said. “Hard to hold four quarterbacks. So you got to make decisions. Mike White can play in this league, we would not hesitate to call Mike White back here, and we loved our time with him. As far as Shane, tough injury last year, we're excited about where he was.

"I thought this year you saw him take a step from a year ago, and you want to keep developing, but tough decisions. Excited with our quarterback room, where it's at, and hopefully Mike lands in a good spot, but we wouldn't hesitate to bring him back.”

White has been a career backup, and we think it won't be long before he is signed to a team's practice squad.

As for the Bills, they are content with Trubisky and Buechele backing up Allen in 2025 as the franchise hunts its first Lombardi trophy, something that some people think should be a formality this season.

The life of an NFL player is tough, especially one on the roster bubble, and the quarterback battle was always going to be a tough one to determine a "winner," and it was Trubisky who saw his hand raised.
