The end of an era in Philadelphia as the Eagles ship edge rusher Bryce Huff off to San Francisco to play for the 49ers, which leaves some questions to be answered.

On Friday, the Eagles and 49ers were finalizing a deal to send Huff to San Francisco in exchange for a mid-round draft pick. It was a divorce that had been in the works for some time, following a disastrous one-season stint in Philadelphia.

Many now wonder what went wrong and why the Eagles couldn't make it work after Huff showcased potential with over 10 sacks in 2023 with the New York Jets. A now former Eagle was able to shed some light on the situation and why it might have been doomed from the start.

Huff's struggles in Philadelphia explained by an Eagles legend

Recently retired defensive lineman Brandon Graham appeared on the Ross Tucker Podcast, with a short clip from the interview shared online. Tucker asked Graham about the Huff-Eagles situation, and it all boils down to a lack of a scheme that fits Huff.

"Well, I just think with the Jets it was just that defense, man. I know what it's like playing in that 4-3 Wide Nine, go get it every play. It's always 'stop the run on the way to the quarterback.' That's the slogan and type of defense. It's all scheme. I mean I've seen different guys flourish in different systems and then you see him get in another system. It's different and what they asked of him this year, it just wasn't a great marriage I will say because I know Huff can rush. I've seen him doing all that, but sometimes, it's just different with the type of scheme and what people asks of you and they want you to be able to do and maybe it just wasn't that for Vic Fangio. You don't really know. i just know that he's a baller man and hopefully for him I wanted to be a win-win for the team and a win for him, but you know in this case I want him to be happy."

Huff played just one year in Philadelphia, appearing in 12 games. He finished with just 13 tackles, four quarterback hits, three tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. A wrist injury cost him five games and was a healthy scratch from the Super Bowl, as he didn't produce any stats in the postseason.

The Eagles originally signed Huff to a three-year, $51 million contract last offseason. Thanks to some clever financial maneuvering, Philadelphia was able to work out a restructured deal with Huff to make it so that the team would save $15 million in cap space in 2025.

Graham was there firsthand to see Huff practice and play, having spent 15 years with the Eagles' organization. He sounded like he was praising Huff's skill set, but it wasn't a good fit for both sides.

The good news is that both sides now get the fresh start they need, as the Eagles save money and acquire a draft pick. Huff gets a new home and reunites with his old head coach, Robert Salah, who is now the defensive coordinator for the 49ers. It's a win-win for both sides, and a chapter that's now closed.
