Broncos Put Faith In OC Davis Webb

In 2025, a Broncos team that ended up just one game short of the Super Bowl averaged 342.6 total yards per game, the 10th-highest average in the NFL. After one week of games in 2026, Denver’s offense ranked dead last in the league, having gained only 176 yards in a loss to the Chiefs. The stark difference going from one play-caller to another drew some harsh criticism from the NFL media, but the Broncos certainly weren’t ready to give up on Webb after only one game.

Webb, a former quarterback who only made one start in two appearances over his six years in the NFL, joined the Broncos coaching staff alongside Payton in 2023 as the quarterbacks coach. Last year, the team added the moniker of offensive pass game coordinator to his title, as well. Webb became a popular candidate for several open offensive coordinator jobs across the league. The Ravens, Giants, and Eagles requested to interview him, and he was a rumored candidate for the Chargers’ open job, as well.

The Broncos really valued Webb, seeing him as one of the bright, young, up-and-coming coaches in the NFL. Realizing that the opportunity for him to call plays elsewhere would make those jobs more attractive, it was decided that Payton would give up his play-calling duties to keep Webb in house. They promoted him to offensive coordinator and handed the play-calling responsibility down from the head coach.

Though Webb’s first game didn’t go swimmingly, the Broncos intend to stick with the 31-year-old coordinator. The offense’s 392 total yards against the Jaguars today certainly alleviated some concerns, but these first two weeks have been only two chapters in what will be a book with, at least, 17 chapters. The Broncos will have their work cut out for them to keep up with the Chiefs and Raiders in the AFC West, but they’ll take it a game at a time, and they’ll work through any growing pains they may experience along the way.
