Browns insider reveals reason behind $50M Todd Monken investment

In the NFL, he unlocked Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson’s true potential as the team’s offensive coordinator. He threw 41 passing touchdowns against just four interceptions in 2024.

Jackson’s passing yards jumped from 2,242 (2022) to 4,172 (2024) under Monken’s system. Monken can transform a team over time, and the Browns need a makeover. Cabot believes it would be nothing short of a magic trick, but Monken is the man for the job. 

“What I’m looking for from him, and in some respects it’s going to be pulling a rabbit out of a hat, but what I’m looking for from him is to take this very, very young offense and turn it into an explosive, effective, efficient, point-scoring offense,” she said in the July 25 episode of the podcast.

After firing Kevin Stefanski, the Browns interviewed six candidates, including Grant Udinski, Nate Scheelhaase, and Mike McDaniel. The job description was clear: a strong, offensive-minded leader who could bring stability to the Browns. 

They last thrived during Stefanski’s four-year stint, clinched two playoff berths in 2020 and 2023. After that, the Browns went  4-13 and  5-12 in the past two seasons, respectively. 

While the Browns’ defense is one of the best in the league, their offense lies on the opposite end. With Jim Schwartz, their former defensive coordinator, gone, Monken has to keep the secondary stable and improve the offense. 

One analyst believes these challenges are insurmountable and Monken will exit soon. 

“One and done”: Skeptics question Todd Monken’s future with Cleveland Browns

On July 22, SB Nation’s Jarrett Bailey made 61 predictions for the 2026 season. One of them is that Monken will be shown the exit after the 2026 season. 

“Monken ends up being a one-and-done coach in Cleveland,” Bailey wrote. “It may not have happened that way if Harbaugh didn’t become available.”

John Harbaugh, Monken’s colleague from their Ravens days, was a big name in the contest; he was never interviewed. Bailey further wrote that his brother, Jim, will replace Monken next. 

It is too early to predict the future outcome of Monken’s career with the Browns. While the franchise appears to have good faith in him, whether he triumphs or not is to be seen. What are your thoughts?
