Buffalo Bills Officially add K Matt Prater and P Cameron Johnston
USA Today Sports

A week after the Bills’ 41-40 comeback win over the Ravens, Buffalo continues to make adjustments to maintain their special teams units. Late last week, the Bills signed veteran kicker Matt Prater to their practice roster. The move to add Prater indicated that there was trouble ahead for kicker Tyler Bass. Before playing against the Ravens, Buffalo announced that Bass would be moved to the injured list and Prater would be activated.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen chats with Matt Prater who won the game with his field goal attempt. Prater received a Sunday Night football after the game at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park on Sept. 7, 2025.

Prater delivered a successful game, filling in for Bass, making three field goals. For his efforts, the team has officially signed him to the Bills’ active roster. Additionally, the Bills released punter Brad Robbins and signed former Pittsburgh Steelers punter Cameron Johnston. NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported these special teams personnel moves on his X account.

The additions of Prater and Johnston should solidify the Bills’ kicker and punter position for the next several weeks.  Buffalo’s choice to add Prater was due to the hip injury suffered by kicker Tyler Bass.  In the case, punter Cameron Johnston steps in to replace Brad Robbins.  Robbins struggled to live up to expectations for Buffalo against the Ravens.

Kicker Matt Prater Steps in for Tyler Bass

Replacing Matt Prater with Tyler Bass is a big win for Buffalo.  Prater is a 41-year 0ld NFL veteran, and he has had consistent success while playing for the Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, and Arizona Cardinals.  During his NFL career, Prater has made 410 out of 490 field goal attempts and 589 out of 605 extra point attempts.  Furthermore, Prater stepped in for Bass on short notice and had an outstanding night, making three field goals and both of the extra points that he attempted.

Bills Switch it Up at Punter

Buffalo only allowed one week for punter Brad Robbins to prove that he was the best man for the Bills’ special teams unit.  Unfortunately, Robbins only averaged 39.5 yards/punt, and he only pinned the Ravens inside their own 20 once.  Robbins’ performance, coupled with the Steelers’ decision to release Cameron Johnston, opened the door for the Bills to acquire Johnston and attempt to upgrade their punter position. Like Prater, Johnston brings extensive NFL experience to Buffalo. He spent four seasons with the Eagles, three with the Texans, and two with the Steelers. Johnston has averaged 47.3 yards per punt and placed 187 punts inside the 20.
