Raider Nation got the week off, but they were hit with devastating news on Sunday.
That afternoon, news broke out that Carol Davis, the wife of late Las Vegas Raiders owner Al Davis, mother of current principal owner Mark Davis and the First Lady of Raider Nation, passed away at the age of 93 on Friday.
“Her strength and resilience, although not seen by the masses, were always on display to those who were fortunate to be in her presence. She was a strong woman who exuded a compassionate and loving side,” the Raiders said in a released statement.
“Carol provided unbridled support and unparalleled guidance to the Davis family and the Raiders organization for over 60 years. Her direct impact on the Greatness of the Raiders continues to be felt, cherished, and honored, and is woven into the fabric of this historic franchise. If Al was the heart of the Raiders, Carol was the soul.”
On Sunday, Mark lit the Al Davis Memorial Torch at Allegiant Stadium in his mother’s honor.
Davis was at her husband’s side during his time running the Raiders, aiding him in overseeing the team as it won three Super Bowls. Even after his passing in 2011, Davis continued to support the team as it changed hands to Mark.
Davis continued the traditions of her husband in inducting former Raiders in the Hall of Fame. In 2021, she inducted former Raiders quarterback and Super Bowl-winning head coach Tom Flores into the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
Her contributions continued even as the Raiders moved out of California, as she became the first person to light the Memorial Torch at Allegiant Stadium to commemorate the first game in the team’s new home in 2020.
The team confirmed that a private ceremony would be held in Oakland, California, with a celebration of life to be determined at a later date.
