Carolina Panthers Sign New Quarterback

The Carolina Panthers are expected to sign a new quarterback. Kyle Trask is set to join the team following a hamstring injury to undrafted rookie Haynes King. A league source confirmed the move on Saturday.

Trask worked out for Carolina last week. Head coach Dave Canales has history with the veteran. The two spent the 2023 season together in Tampa Bay.

The Panthers currently list Bryce Young as the starter. Kenny Pickett serves as the primary backup. King’s injury created an immediate need for another arm.

Kyle Trask Brings Familiarity to Carolina

Kyle Trask spent four seasons with the Buccaneers after they selected him in the second round of the 2021 draft. He later landed on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad in 2025.

The 28-year-old has appeared in seven NFL games. He has attempted just 11 passes and has yet to make a start. Canales previously said he “loves” Trask from their time in Tampa.

Carolina brought Trask in for a workout even after general manager Dan Morgan said the team had no plans to add a fourth quarterback. The injury changed those plans quickly.

Trask worked under Dave Canales in Tampa Bay in 2023. He also worked out for the team last week.

Kyle Trask Fills Immediate Depth Need

Kyle Trask offers experience in the NFC South and knowledge of Canales’ offense. That background could help him compete for a roster spot right away.

The Panthers will need a corresponding roster move to clear space. Trask provides a low-risk option with prior exposure to the coaching staff.

Young remains the clear starter. Pickett is locked in as the No. 2 after signing a deal with guaranteed money. Trask will battle for the third-string role or a practice squad opportunity.

Haynes King delivered a strong performance in the Hall of Fame Game against the Arizona Cardinals. The undrafted rookie completed 21 of 34 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed three times for 39 yards, including a five-yard scramble for the game-winning score as time expired.

King led scoring drives on five of his six possessions after replacing Kenny Pickett and helped Carolina secure a 33-30 victory.

The expected signing comes after King went down with a hamstring issue. Carolina moved fast to address the quarterback room. Kyle Trask now heads to the Carolinas to reunite with his former offensive coordinator.
