The sports community learned on Sunday night that former ESPN personality John Brenkus passed away. He was 54 years old.

Brenkus was best known for his "Sports Science" segment. It aired on Fox Sports in 2007 before making its debut on ESPN in 2010. His show was specifically designed to "uncover sports’ biggest myths and mysteries by using cutting-edge technology to measure momentum, friction and the laws of gravity."

The "Sports Science" host's family revealed that he battled depression prior to his death.

"It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away," the family's statement read. "John, co-founder of Base Productions, Founder of Brinx.TV, and co-creator and host of the six-time Emmy award-winning ‘Sport Science,’ had been battling depression.

"John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31, 2025. His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time, and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help."

On Tuesday, the Virginia Department of Health, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner provided an update on Brenkus.

TMZ Sports was told that Brenkus died by suicide last week.

Over the past few days, tributes have been pouring in for Brenkus.

"Prayers up for John Brenkus and his family," Robert Griffin III wrote on X. "The man who gave us the Emmy Winning Sports Science lost his battle with depression at the age of 53."

"I'm so incredibly sad to learn of the passing of John Brenkus. I did an episode of Sport Science back in the day and we remained friends. The ultimate professional, he was kind, encouraging, smart and inventive. This is awful," Matthew Berry said.

"This is incredibly sad. John was so good at what he did. Sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, John," ESPN's Adam Schefter commented.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Brenkus family.
