The Chicago Bears lost Caleb Williams to a hamstring injury in Sunday’s 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
The injury appeared to some sports doctors as a potential grade 2 or grade 3 hamstring strain, which could have meant Williams would miss multiple weeks to months due to the injury.
The Bears were waiting for the results of testing to confirm Williams’ status.
Per Tom Pelissero of Netflix, the Bears noted Williams avoided a major injury. However, the team gave a rather curious update devoid of more detail, such as what grade of strain Williams suffered and whether he’d return for Week 3 when Chicago plays the Philadelphia Eagles on “Monday Night Football.”
“Bears QB Caleb Williams avoided any major injury to his hamstring Sunday, tests confirmed today — and the team isn’t even ruling him out for next Monday’s game against the Eagles, sources tell The Ringer NetflixSports,” Pelissero posted on X. “A massive sigh of relief in Chicago.”
(Updated)
Per Adam Schefter, Bears head coach Ben Johnson told ESPN 1000 that he expects Williams to be week-to-week with the injury. Per Schefter:
“Ben Johnson said that the expectation is that Caleb Williams ‘will likely miss some time.'”
Williams appeared to be in serious pain following his injury in the red zone during the fourth quarter. He also seemed frustrated knowing he would not be able to help lead the Bears to a win over the Vikings.
Indeed, backup Tyson Bagent entered the game to replace Williams, and the offense settled for a field goal that was blocked when rookie tight end Sam Roush missed a block. The Vikings would go on to win the game 9-3 and send the Bears to 1-1 to start the season.
The three points on Sunday were humbling after Chicago put up 59 in its win Week 1 win over the Carolina Panthers. Bagent went 5 of 9 passing for 54 yards against the Vikings.
The Bears will host the 2-0 Eagles in Week 3. If Williams is unable to go, the Bears will turn to Bagent to start. Chicago beat the Eagles 24-15 in Philadelphia last season.
