Chiefs Predicted To Add 6-Time Pro Bowler In Free Agency

The Kansas City Chiefs could prioritize landing a new top target for Patrick Mahomes this offseason.

Kansas City made its third straight Super Bowl despite lacking offensive firepower in 2024. Without a true top wide receiver, Mahomes registered his fewest passing yards (3,928) since taking over the starting job in 2017.

Rashee Rice will return from a season-ending knee injury, but last year's veteran acquisitions can all enter free agency. One writer suggested a former AFC West rival to help fill the void.

Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer predicted that the Chiefs will sign Keenan Allen.

"The Chiefs keep going through veteran receivers, but the difference here is that Allen is a dedicated big slot who can consistently get open for Patrick Mahomes on intermediate routes," Iyer wrote. "He'd also provide a veteran contingency if tight end Travis Kelce retires. The 32-year-old pass-catcher would play well off youngsters Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice."

Allen exceeded 1,000 receiving yards in six of 11 seasons with the Chargers. The six-time Pro Bowler collected a career-high 108 catches in 2023 before getting traded to the Chicago Bears for a fourth-round pick.

Allen took a step back on his new team, securing 70 of 121 targets for 744 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games. His 57.9 percent catch rate and 6.1 yards per target each represented the worst marks of his career.

Meanwhile, Kansas City's attempts to upgrade at wide receiver backfired last year.

After one year away from the team, Kansas City brought back JuJu Smith-Schuster for 2024. He tallied just 231 yards and two touchdowns in eight games.

Marquise "Hollywood" Brown suffered a shoulder injury during the preseason and did not make his Chiefs debut until Week 16. Including the playoffs, he registered 141 yards in five games.

A midseason trade for DeAndre Hopkins didn't offer a significant jolt either. The three-time All-Pro had 437 yards and four touchdowns in 10 regular-season games and just three catches for 29 yards and a score in three postseason contests.

Smith-Schuster, Brown, and Hopkins are all free agents, leaving Rice and Worthy as Kansas City's top returning wideouts. Even if a 35-year-old Kelce returns for his 13th season, Mahomes may need another reliable possession receiver like Allen to repeat as AFC champions.
